Eek… that title sounds grim doesn’t it? But I wanted to take just a minute to share with you two HUGE mistakes that I often see people make when it comes to making a new website. Hopefully, this post will help you to avoid these!
Mistake #1 – Assuming if you build it, they will come (& buy)
Even the prettiest of websites can be a total flop if you don’t have other marketing tactics in place. Don’t assume just because you’ve created your website, that people will automatically flood to your homepage or sign up for your e-newsletter. Your website is just one piece of the puzzle and the unfortunate truth is that most people who visit it aren’t going to buy from you unless you’ve taken some other steps to attract and appeal to them.
Whether it’s Instagram, Facebook Ads, SEO, blogging or something else, you HAVE to get yourself and your business out in front of your customers. Find out where they hang out and be present there, constantly and consistently.
I’m also a big fan of the idea of creating a tribe of supporters. Better than shamelessly promoting yourself, you need to show up as an authority in your niche or industry and give back value. Join and participate in relevant Facebook groups or start your own to offer support and advice around your business topic. Once you’ve established yourself as someone knowledgeable and helpful, people will start turning to you when they need an expert.

Mistake #2 – Not having a solid brand and website strategy
If you are seriously stressing over what color palette and fonts to use, you might be thinking about your website all wrong. Yes, those are important, but what’s even more important is that you have a solid brand and goals for your website to create your website strategy.
So, what do I mean by that? A strategy is a long-term plan of where you see your business going and involves how you talk about yourself as well as how you communicate with your ideal customers. If you’ve been struggling with creating your website, it’s possible it’s because you’re missing a clear strategy.
When you have a solid strategy in place, a lot of the questions you may have about your website will start to answer themselves… Questions you have like:
- How many pages should I have on my website?
- What kinds of things should I include on my homepage?
- What should I say on my About page?
- Should I list my pricing on my website?
- Do I need a blog?
- Where should I host my website?
Now, I can’t tell you exactly what the perfect strategy should be for your new website. Only you can figure that out because it’s completely dependent on your goals, BUT…
Have you’ve asked yourself any of these questions OR are feeling like you don’t even know where to start with any of it? So many women have reached out to me telling me how stressful and overwhelming making a website is for them and that’s exactly the reason I made my website templates.
Templates can do some of the major heavy-lifting of your website for you. Plus, if you purchase a Showit template from my shop, I’ve got basic strategy and best practices from all my years of being a website designer baked in. The best part is I’ve created my templates for actual businesses that are inspired by real women I know like Virtual Assistants, Bloggers, Coaches, Photographers, and more.
