I’m always down for a good experiment on my website, especially when it means figuring out what actually drives conversions. So, I decided to play scientist and test out exactly where my quiz call-to-action (CTA) should live for the most clicks and conversions.

Spoiler alert: The results weren’t what I expected—and if you’re thinking about adding quizzes to your biz, stick around because you’ll want to hear this.

If you’re new to quizzes, let me fill you in. Quizzes are basically the fun, low-key way to get your audience clicking and growing your email list. I’ve been using one for years, and it’s been one of the best ways for connecting with my audience. Plus, I’m a big fan of Interact Quizzes*—the easiest quiz tool out there that practically does the list-building for you.

But the real question I had was: where should I place the quiz CTA to get the most clicks?

The Experiment

I placed the quiz CTA in several different locations on my website:

  • Banner at the top of my homepage
  • Popup on various pages
  • Home page CTA section
  • Home page freebies section
  • Resources page
  • Blog freebies section
  • Blog sidebar
  • Within a blog post

Here’s a look at where each of the CTAs live on my site so you can see them in context.

After everything was set up, I let it run for 60 days and tracked the clicks + conversions from each location. Here’s what I found…

The Results

Here’s the data straight from my analytics below and a handy table too.

As you can see, the homepage banner was the clear winner, bringing in the most clicks at 63. Interestingly, my popup wasn’t far behind with 41 clicks. These two areas greatly outperformed the rest. During this period, I was able to gain 44 new email subscribers / leads from my quiz, without any additional effort on my part.

Surprisingly, even though the homepage banner takes up the least space, it still beat out every other placement! I’m guessing this is because it’s the very first thing you see on my site.

The CTA section and Freebies section on the homepage received significantly fewer clicks compared to the banner, showing that while users are willing to interact with CTAs, they’re most likely to engage with something bold and prominent, like a banner or popup.

My resources page and the blog-related areas didn’t drive much traffic to the quiz at all, with the blog post getting the fewest clicks (just 1!). This was a great insight because it tells me that my quiz may need to be featured differently in my blog posts in order to get more traction.

What Did I Learn?

  1. Prime real estate on your site matters – The banner at the top of my homepage performed the best by a wide margin. This confirms that putting the quiz in a high-traffic and prominent location where visitors can’t miss it is crucial.
  2. Popups still work – Even though popups can be divisive in the design community, they are majorly effective. I was surprised by how many people clicked through on the popup.
  3. Homepage wins – Not just the banner, but the CTA and Freebies sections on my homepage also performed better than deeper pages like Resources or Blog, which leads me to focus more on optimizing the homepage for conversions.
  4. My blog still needs some work – It seems my blog audience didn’t engage as much with the quiz CTA. This might be due to quiz placement or audience intent. I’ll experiment further with in-content CTAs or maybe different types of quizzes.
  5. More is definitely better. Even though some CTA placements performed better than others, ultimately it was the sum of all the placements that helped me to drive more subscribers.

How You Can Use This in Your Business

If you’re interested in adding a quiz to your website, I highly recommend Interact. It’s the tool I used to create and embed my quiz directly on my site, and their platform makes it super easy to track analytics like clicks and conversions.

Whether you’re using quizzes to generate leads, engage your audience, or simply offer fun, interactive content, where you place that quiz on your site really matters. My experiment shows that banners and popups are powerful tools to get eyes on your quiz, and they might just be the best spots for you to place your CTA as well.
