Let me say something that might surprise you coming from a web designer: a custom website is NOT always the answer. At least… not right now. And knowing the difference between “I need this NOW” + “I need this eventually” could save you thousands of dollars + a whole lot of frustration.
So how do you actually know when the time is right? Here are the six signs I see most consistently in clients who are ready to make the leap:
1. Your business is at least 2-3 years old.
A general rule of thumb I always share: if your business is less than 2-3 years old, a custom website probably isn’t your next move. In those early years you are figuring out SO much… your offers, your pricing, your process, your ideal client. And all of that flux means the website you build today might not make sense for the business you’re running 12 months from now.
Once you’ve proven the concept, locked in your positioning + have paying clients coming through the door consistently… THAT’S when a custom website starts to make real sense.
2. You’ve outgrown your existing template-based DIY website.
Website templates are incredible starting points. I sell them + I mean that genuinely… for the right stage of business, they are the smartest investment you can make. But there comes a point where your business has grown more complex than any template can accommodate. You’re adding offers, you need custom functionality, you want a visitor journey that’s specific to HOW your business works… and a template just can’t get you there.
If you’ve been hacking + patching your existing site to try to make it do things it wasn’t built to do… that’s your sign.

3. The tech is draining you.
You did not start your business to spend your Saturday mornings troubleshooting error messages + Googling why your contact form stopped working. If managing your website has become its own part-time job… one you never applied for + definitely don’t enjoy, it’s time to hand it off!
A custom website built by someone who knows what they’re doing means you get a site that actually works the way it should… without you having to hold it together with duct tape + dreams.
4. Your website doesn’t have that *IT* factor anymore.
You know the feeling. You land on someone’s website + you just KNOW. It’s polished, it’s confident, it feels like a whole experience… And then you go back + look at your own site and… it’s just fine. It was fine when you built it two years ago. But fine isn’t cutting it anymore. Your prices have gone up, your offers have evolved + your brand has grown into something your current website just doesn’t reflect.
If your site doesn’t give visitors an instant sense of who you are + why you’re the obvious choice… it’s costing you.
5. Your website is actively holding you back.
This one hits differently. It’s not just that your website could be better… it’s that it’s actually what’s STOPPING you. You’re not promoting yourself as much as you should be because you’re lowkey embarrassed to send people to your site.
You’ve got a new offer you want to launch, but your existing site can’t support it the way it needs to. You’re losing clients to competitors whose websites just look more legit than yours. If any of that sounds uncomfortably familiar… the cost of NOT investing in a custom website is already higher than the cost of the website itself.
If you’re on the fence about a full website redesign vs. starting fresh, this post breaks down the difference.
6. You’re ready for everything that comes with it.
This last one is maybe the most important. Sometimes the thing holding us back isn’t the money or the timing… it’s ourselves! We convince ourselves we need to wait until everything is perfect, until we have more clients, until we feel more ready.
But here’s what I know after years of doing this: there is no perfect moment. What there IS is the decision to stop playing small + start showing up in a way that matches the business you’re actually building. When you’re ready for MORE… more visibility, more authority, more leads coming to you on autopilot, a custom website is one of the most powerful ways to get there.
Not sure yet? Here’s how to know you’re not ready for a custom website…
I know that might sound like a weird thing for a web designer to say… but hear me out. A custom website is a significant investment + if the timing isn’t right, it won’t matter how beautiful it is. It won’t perform the way you need it to and you’ll end up feeling like you wasted your money. So before we talk about what working together looks like, let’s make sure this is actually the right move for you RIGHT NOW.
You might not be ready for a custom website yet if…
1. Your offer / services are still changing.
If you’re still figuring out what you’re selling, who you’re selling it to + what makes you different… a custom website isn’t going to fix that. In fact it’ll just lock you into messaging + a structure that you’ll want to change in six months anyway. Get crystal clear on your offer first and THEN invest in the site that sells it.
2. You’re pre-revenue or very early stage.
If you haven’t yet proven that people will pay for what you’re offering, a custom website is putting the cart before the horse. Start with a simple template-based site, get some clients, validate your offer + come back when you’ve got traction.
3. Your budget is a stretch.
A custom website is an investment that should feel exciting, not terrifying. If pulling the trigger means you’re wiping out your entire business savings with nothing left for marketing, ads or operations… the timing probably isn’t right. A great designer will tell you this too. The right investment at the wrong time is still the wrong investment.
4. You’re hoping the website will solve a business problem it can’t fix.
A custom website can do a LOT of things… but it can’t fix a broken offer, unclear positioning or a lack of traffic. If you don’t have an audience yet or your offer isn’t converting, those are the things to solve first. Your website should amplify what’s already working… not be the thing you’re counting on to save the business.
If any of those hit a little close to home, that’s okay. It just means now isn’t your moment yet. In the meantime, one of my Showit website templates is the perfect place to start… professional, conversion-focused + built to grow with you until you’re ready for the full custom experience.
